Escape Velocity: Own the Audience, Build Product Channels

The deeper escapes from the law sit closer to the product. First, convert rented reach into owned reach. Traffic you buy decays with its channel; an audience you can contact directly (your email list, your logged-in users) is reach that no auction can bid away. Every campaign should leave behind some permanently owned audience.

Second, build acquisition into the product itself. Viral loops, invitations, shared artifacts, and network effects are channels competitors can't simply copy into an ad manager, because they're inseparable from the product. They decay too, but slowly, and you control the mechanism.

The composite strategy: exploit young channels aggressively while their economics are great, milk mature channels with disciplined refresh, and continuously convert both into assets that outlive any channel: owned audience and product-driven growth.

Key idea

Rented channels decay; owned audiences and product-driven loops are the assets that survive. Use channels to build them, not just to buy users.
