Founders Run Both Schedules

A founder's job is a maker job and a manager job stapled together. You have to build, and you have to hire, sell, fundraise, and decide. PG lived this at Viaweb and found a blunt workaround: he programmed from dinner until 3am, safe from interruption, then did manager work during the day. Two workdays in one.

You probably won't copy the 3am part. But the structure generalizes: give each mode its own territory instead of letting them interleave. Maker mornings and manager afternoons, or maker days and manager days.

YC itself is the odd case: an investment firm that chose to run on the maker's schedule, because its partners were makers first. That choice is available to more companies than make it.
