Where the Team Sits
Two main models. Matrixed pods: the Growth PM reports into Product, everyone else reports into their own function, and they coordinate as a pod. This mimics a normal product team.
Business unit: all functions report to a GM, like Facebook and early Uber. More independence, but it creates silos and risks conflict with other teams.
Most companies end up with a hybrid. The principle Chen keeps returning to: start with the problems you're trying to solve. Begin with the KPIs and insights, then design the org around execution.
“You have to start with the problems you are trying to solve.”
Key idea
There's no universally correct structure. Pick KPIs first, then choose the org shape that lets you execute against them.
