Traction Is the Point

Traction is measurable evidence of customer demand: paying users, growth in signups, revenue moving up and to the right. It's the thing investors, press, and hires actually respond to, and it's the thing most startups fail to get.

The core claim of the book: almost every failed startup had a product. What they didn't have was enough customers. Founders obsess over building and treat distribution as something to figure out later, and later never comes.

The authors interviewed founders behind DuckDuckGo, HubSpot, Mint, Evernote, and dozens more. The pattern across all of them: the winners treated getting traction as a first-class problem, studied like the product itself, not an afterthought.

Almost every failed startup has a product. What failed startups don't have are enough customers.

Key idea

Startups mostly fail from lack of customers, not lack of product. Distribution deserves the same rigor you give engineering.
