Focus on the Road, Not the Wall

Horowitz borrows the technique from race car driving. When they teach you to drive at speed, they teach you: when you go around a turn at high speed, focus on the road, not the wall. Focus on the wall and you drive right into it. Focus on the road and you follow it.

The Struggle floods your vision with walls: the payroll you might miss, the customer about to churn, the layoff you might have to do, the company dying. Attention is steering. What you stare at is what you drive toward.

This doesn't mean ignoring the dangers. It means choosing where your working attention lives: on the next move, the fix, the customer you can still win. Focus on where you are going, not on what you are trying to avoid.
