The Components, Part 2: Segment, Category, Trend

Component four is the target segment: the customers who care intensely about your specific value. Not everyone who could buy, but the group with characteristics that make them feel the pain your value removes. Best-fit customers buy quickly, pay full price, and don't churn.

Component five is the market category, the frame you declare. Saying 'we're a CRM' or 'we're email for teams' triggers a flood of assumptions about features, pricing, and competitors. Pick the category where your unique value is obvious, not the biggest category you can name.

The plus-one is a relevant trend, and it's optional. A trend (AI, remote work, privacy) can add urgency and modernity, but a trend is not a category. Companies that position on trend alone leave buyers thinking they're interesting but having no idea what to buy. Trend layers on top of a clear category, never replaces it.

Key idea

Pick the segment that cares most, declare the category where your value is self-evident, and use trends only as seasoning on top of a clear category, never as the category.
