How to Get Rich (without getting lucky)

by Naval Ravikant ยท read the original

Naval's famous tweetstorm turned podcast: wealth is assets that earn while you sleep, and the path there is specific knowledge, accountability, and permissionless leverage, not hours worked.

  1. 1

Seek Wealth, Not Money or Status

Wealth is assets that earn while you sleep, and building it is positive-sum. Status games are zero-sum, so avoid them and the people playing them.

  2. 2

    Specific Knowledge

Specific knowledge can't be taught in school or it would be commoditized. Find it by following genuine curiosity: what feels like play to you and looks like work to others.

  3. 3

    Take Accountability

Take risks under your own name. Public accountability is scary, which is why society pays so well for it.

  4. 4

    The Three Kinds of Leverage

Labor and capital require someone's permission. Code and media don't: build once, replicate for free, earn while you sleep. That's the leverage of this era.

  5. 5

    Productize Yourself

Turn who you are into something that scales. Nobody can out-compete you at being you, and a productized self earns without your hourly presence.

  6. 6

    Long-Term Games with Long-Term People

Returns come from compound interest, and compounding needs decades. Pick people and games you can stay in for the long haul, and don't reset the clock.

  7. 7

    Judgment Over Effort

With enough leverage, judgment beats effort by orders of magnitude. Build it through deep fundamentals and let a public track record prove it.

  8. 8

Work Like a Lion, Not Like Cattle

Sprint hard when it matters, rest fully when it doesn't. In leveraged work, hours are meaningless; judgment and bursts of real output are everything.
