Investment: Storing Value, Loading the Trigger
The fourth step asks the user for a bit of work: follow accounts, build a playlist, import contacts, tune preferences, accumulate history. This inverts the usual funnel logic of asking for nothing. A small ask after a reward, when the user is warm, gets accepted.
Investment pays out twice. First, stored value: unlike physical goods, these products improve with use. A curated feed, a trained recommendation engine, a reputation score, years of files. Each deposit raises what the user would lose by leaving, and switching costs climb without a contract.
Second, investments load the next trigger. Follow someone and their next post pings you back. Send a message and the reply pulls you in. The loop closes on itself: today's investment schedules tomorrow's trigger, and the hook spins without the company paying for re-entry.
Key idea
End each loop by getting the user to deposit something: data, content, followers, reputation. Stored value makes leaving costly, and the investment itself loads the next trigger.
