Market-Product Fit: Market First
Balfour deliberately reverses the phrase. Not product-market fit but market-product fit, because the market comes first. Founders typically start with a product idea and go hunting for a market. That's backwards: you end up thinking about the solution before properly understanding the problem and the audience that has it.
Start instead with hypotheses about the market: who has the problem, how painful it is, how often it occurs, and whether those people know they have it and are trying to solve it. Then shape a product to that market.
HubSpot's early choice illustrates it. They picked mid-market B2B companies (roughly 10 to 1000 employees) drowning in a shift away from cold calls and trade shows, then built the all-in-one inbound marketing product that segment needed. The market definition drove the product, not the reverse.
“You are thinking about the solution before properly understanding the problem and audience that has that problem.”
Key idea
Start with the market and its problem, then build the product. Product-first thinking means designing a solution before you understand who it's for.
