This Is Day 1

Near the top of the letter sits its most quoted line: 'this is Day 1 for the Internet and, if we execute well, for Amazon.com.' Massive milestones had just been hit (838% growth, an IPO), and Bezos's framing was: we're at the beginning.

Day 1 became doctrine. Bezos reattached this 1997 letter to every subsequent annual report for over two decades, and named his building Day 1. The idea: the moment a company starts acting like an established winner (defending, optimizing process over outcome, slowing down) is the moment decline starts. Day 2, he later wrote, is stasis followed by irrelevance.

The 1997 letter models the posture: despite the year's success, it closes on vigilance, urgency, and a list of real risks (aggressive competition, execution risk, expansion risk). Optimism and paranoia at the same time. That tension is Day 1.

But this is Day 1 for the Internet and, if we execute well, for Amazon.com.
Jeff Bezos

Key idea

Treat every day as the beginning. The habits of an incumbent (defending, coasting, process worship) are the leading indicators of decline.
