What Counts as a True Fan

A true fan is defined by behavior, not sentiment: someone who will buy anything you produce. They drive 200 miles to see you sing. They buy the hardback, the paperback, and the audiobook. They buy the t-shirt, the mug, the deluxe box set. They wait for your next thing and pre-order it.

That's a much higher bar than a follower, a subscriber, or a like. Millions of people can enjoy your work casually and generate almost nothing. A true fan generates revenue on every release and, just as important, shows up predictably.

The test for your own audience is blunt: how many people would buy your next thing sight unseen, purely because you made it? That number, not your follower count, is your true fan count.

Key idea

A true fan buys everything you make. Followers are an audience; true fans are an income.
